If you’re having trouble falling pregnant, there are several steps you can take to ensure that you
give yourself the best possible chance of conceiving. First and foremost, says Dr Jackson
Ndhlovu, is to look after your body and ensure that you’re in the best possible health.
Key to being in good health is an ideal body weight. If you’re underweight, you may not be
ovulating regularly whereas if you’re overweight, your body may produce too much oestrogen,
which can interfere with ovulation.
Keeping track of the intervals between your periods will give you an indication of when you’re
ovulating, which happens in the middle of your cycle and lasts about a day. This is the time
when your body is most fertile, and you can become pregnant.
Knowing exactly when you’re ovulating can be tricky, especially if your cycle is irregular. There
are several methods which you can use to help identify when you’re most fertile, including
tracking your cervical mucous; monitoring your basal temperature; or using ‘ovulation
predicting’ kits.
Women are most fertile for about five days before ovulating and the day of ovulation, so having
frequent sexual intercourse over that time is a good idea.
Eating a varied and healthy diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and lean proteins
means that your body will be getting a good spread of nutrients like calcium, iron and protein
and will be in the best possible condition when you become pregnant. Foods to be avoided
include caffeine and fish high in mercury.
Smoking and drinking are both a no-no. Smoking can decrease fertility in both men and women
and should be avoided. This also applies to second-hand smoke.
Taking a multivitamin that contains folic acid, a B vitamin that helps to prevent spine and brain
birth defects, for at least a month before planning to become pregnant will be beneficial to both
you and your baby.
